Jewellery was a sign of status as well as a form of savings. In self-sufficient households, cash income could be invested in silver rather than spent on daily needs. Some pieces were purely decorative, others had practical functions. Damaged or outdated pieces could be sold or reworked.
The pieces were well cared for and often worn only at major festivities. Young girls wore modest amounts, while wealthy women wore plenty and more elaborate pieces. Men showed off with silver buckles, buttons, and decorative silver ends on silk ribbons tied around the neck.
