Great advances are made in technology and science in the 1920s. The world is getting smaller, people are coming closer to each other as a result of new ways of travelling and communicating. At the same time, science is proving that we live in a constantly expanding universe. In medicine, insulin changes the lives of diabetics and penicillin is discovered – even though its benefits will not be enjoyed for many years yet.

Society must be transformed in accordance with the spirit of the future, and technology and machines become symbols of this social project. The 1920s mark the definitive breakthrough for many successful Swedish companies, such as Elektrolux, LM Ericsson, Volvo and ASEA.

In the 1920s, technology and science belong to the world of men. Traditional values regarding gender roles mean that women are excluded from higher education within certain fields for a long time.
