The 1920s are a time of great change. Society is to be modernised according to new ideals and values. It is a time of liberation, democratisation and faith in the future, but also of increasing polarisation and hardening zeitgeist. Some argue that not everyone has a place in this new, modern society.

The modern young woman breaks with traditional female roles. Her short hair, clothes, attitude and lifestyle attract both admiration and disgust. Women are entering the public sphere and making their mark in both political and cultural life.
