The 1920s are often referred to as the ’roaring 20s’. After the difficult years of the First World War and the ’Spanish flu’ pandemic, those who have the opportunity want to enjoy life. Dancing, drinking, having fun and forgetting the past.

Clubs and bars serve cocktails with evocative names like ‘Hanky Panky’ and ‘Between the Sheets’, or named after some of the great film stars of the era, like ‘Mary Pickford’ and ‘Valentino’.

But alcohol is controversial and in 1922, Sweden holds its first referendum – should alcohol be completely banned?
