In earlier times, the most old-fashioned garments were worn on solemn occasions, particularly during mourning. Wearing a skirt or a cloak over the head like a mantle was common across various social classes during the 16th and 17th centuries in regions such as the Netherlands and north western Germany. In Scania, the custom persisted within folk culture, especially in traditionally conservative areas.
In south eastern Scania, men continued to wear archaic, wide “pluderhosen” and a peplum-style jacket for funerals and communion services well into the early 19th century—three hundred years after these fashions first emerged.
